"4 Common Questions About Sports Massage"

What is a Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a form of soft tissue manipulation, used to elicit change on specific areas of the body. Different techniques are used to achieve different outcomes, such as increasing blood circulation, relaxing tired muscles and conversely, waking them up before sport.

Does this sound like you?

- Enjoys working out and going to exercise classes but can’t get rid of muscle ache between sessions/classes?

- You work at a desk, so your shoulders and lower back feels stiff and sore at the end of the day?

- You’re training for ‘the big event’ and feel there’s something missing from your training / recovery schedule?

Sports Massage could be the missing thing for you!

How does it differ from other forms of massage?

The treatment is anatomy lead, with knowledge of how different parts of the body are connected, both the root and symptoms will be targeted.

Sports Massage can involve deep tissue techniques involving multiple layers of connective tissue to reach the muscle. Therefore, an effect will be had on the deeper muscles and connective tissue which covers our entire body (known as fascia) .

Who would benefit from Sports Massage?

Sports people and non-sports people alike. Anyone can benefit from promotion of blood flow to soft tissues and increasing muscle flexibility. If you would like to keep aches and pains at bay, sports massage is right for you.
Sports massage can be used as a preventative method to injuries! Like performing a warmup and cool down, sports massage will keep muscles loose and spasm free by warming up the area and promoting muscle flexibility.

Looking for a form of relaxation but other methods aren’t hitting the spot? Deep tissue techniques stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (the one that slows heart rate and induces relaxation.) Sports Massage may just be the form of relaxation you need.

Sports massage can be tailored for individuals. Pre-activity massage will use brisk faster movements to stimulate and energise the body. Recovery massage will use slow, deep and specific pressure techniques to aid the healing process.

At Alpha Physiotherapy we understand how you have gotten to where you are today. We are specialists and know there is a way to get rid of your pain, tension, stiffness and soreness.

“What are some Top Tips for having a Sports Massage?”

  • 1.

    Timing is key

A sports massage can be done pre or post sporting events to either body prep and recovery! If you have a half marathon or important tennis match coming up, regular sports massage can be done in the weeks leading up to help keep the body injury free and help recovery after hard training sessions.

  • 2.

    Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

A hydrated body is a mobile body. Being hydrated before your massage will make the muscles easier to work with. Then keeping hydrated afterwards will aid the massage benefits and keep them going for longer.

  • 3.

    Take a Rest

It is normal to feel a little tender during and/or after a sports massage if there are spots of tension that we have to work through. But mainly you will feel really relaxed, so to make the most of it and take a restful break afterwards to reap the benefits.

  • 4.

Recovery is just as important as training

It’s recommended to take rest days / times between workouts or training sessions to allow the body to recover. To boost recovery and help the body along its way, a sports massage can be used between training!

We understand that some people may be unsure whether Sports Massage is right for them. It could be that you're not sure it will work, or whether we can help your specific problem, or maybe you've had a bad experience in the past?
